derma e Scalp Relief Shampoo & Conditioner Review

If you’re living with eczema, psoriasis, or a dry scalp, you know how frustrating, and even embarrassing it can be. There are a variety of over-the-counter creams and shampoos, and even prescription treatments and ointments, but finding something that works (especially long-term) can be a struggle within itself.  Many products on the market also contain steroids, coal tars or pine tars, which can be harmful to the body and end up drying out skin even further.

The good news is that derma e has formulated a full range of body and hair care products that are safe for the entire family to use, including derma e’s Psorzema Crème and Body Wash, as well as their Scalp Relief Shampoo and Conditioner.  Each product is made with a safe and effective blend of herbal extracts and skin vitamins such as Neem, Burdock, Bearberry, Vitamins A and E to help soothe and renew dry and flaky skin.  Using a natural blend of ingredients, they help reduce redness and encourage healthy looking skin without the use of steroids, coal tar or pine tar.

derma e Scalp Relief Shampoo & Conditioner

The derma e Scalp Relief Hair Care line is specially formulated for those struggling with dandruff and scalp dryness, flaking, itching, and irritation.  The set includes the Scalp Relief Shampoo and Conditioner, which work together to target scalp discomfort while also helping to improve the overall condition of your scalp and hair.  Each product uses key ingredients to provide complete relief, including:

  • Salicylic Acid penetrates to lift away excess flakes and surface buildup
  • Tea Tree and Menthol help calm and cool itch on contact and help maintain scalp purity over time
  • Therapeutic Psorzema® Herbal Blend (Neem, Burdock and Bearberry) replenishes a dry, irritated, scaling scalp, helping to promote optimum scalp and hair health

The derma e Scalp Relief Shampoo is sulfate-free, so it doesn’t strip your body’s natural oils (which often is the cause of light flaking), while the Scalp Relief Conditioner uses Sweet Almond Oil, Organic Argan Oil and Organic Aloe that condition hair thoroughly and boost shine.  Both formulations are: Consumer tested, clinically tested, allergy tested, coal tar-free, pine tar-free, steroid-free, prescription-free, 100% vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, mineral oil-free, lanolin-free, gluten-free, and GMO-free. Here is a super quick video that explains how the two products work.

My Dry Scalp Struggles

If you follow my blog, you may have picked up on my constant struggle with dry skin, especially on my scalp.  The worst of it started after college, when I got my first job.  Maybe it was the stress, my diet changes since I started living (and cooking) all on my own, or genetics – there was something or a combination or things that triggered it.  It wasn’t just in the Winter – it was all year round that I would see flakes on my clothing.  My scalp looked and felt like its own little desert, with scaling and dry spots, and a sort of tightness that never seemed to go away.  I’d tried a variety of methods to try and ‘re-hydrate’ – from tar-containing shampoos to at-home oil treatments.  Unfortunately, the results, if any, were short lived.  Some methods even worsened my situation.

derma e Scalp Relief Shampoo & Conditioner Review & Results

After discovering the derma e Scalp Relief Shampoo and Conditioner, I was anxious to give them a try.  I’ve always been drawn to their natural skincare, especially after having tried their eye cream (review here).  For my first application, I used the Scalp Relief Shampoo and Conditioner together, applying the shampoo first and letting it sit the recommended 3-5 minutes on my scalp and hair.  Despite being sulfate-free, I found the formula very easy to lather and then thoroughly distribute through my hair.  As the shampoo sat, it created a slight cooling sensation thanks to the menthol, as my scalp began to feel more and more soothed by all the naturally good ingredients.  After rinsing, I coated my scalp and hair with the Scalp Relief Conditioner and let the Sweet Almond Oil, Organic Argan Oil and Organic Aloe replenish and re-hydrate my scalp and hair for a full 3 minutes.  The menthol created an intense cooling sensation at the same time (they must put more in the conditioner!).  I have to say, the entire application experience was very enjoyable and therapeutic, and almost spa-like. 🙂 Now let’s fast forward a bit to my results.

My Results After One Use…

The derma e Scalp Relief Shampoo and Conditioner both state on the bottles that they work best after 7 days of use, so I wasn’t expecting any dramatic changes after just the first application.  However, once I let my hair air dry, I took a look at my scalp and was surprised to see a difference so soon!   The usual dry, flaky patches I often get around my hairline (even when using sulfate-free shampoos) weren’t there.  For the first time in a long time, my scalp felt balanced, and even hydrated.  It looked and felt amazing.  Of course, I still had a few flakes here and there since my scalp was still recovering from the previous products I’d used.  That’s essentially where the 7 days come in, since you need time for 1) your scalp to adjust and 2) the Salicylic Acid to break down and remove all the leftover dead skin.

My Results After One Week…

After 3 uses over 8 days, my scalp had completely recovered and balanced out.  I felt so much more confident combing my hair throughout the day without stirring up flakes, letting my hair down without seeing flakes at the roots, and wearing black again without it looking like a mini snowfall on my shoulders!   The best part is that, unlike other dandruff treatments I’ve tried (especially those with tar), these products actually keep my hair looking and feeling good too.  Between the sulfate-free and tar-free shampoo, plus all the natural oils, the shampoo and conditioner left my hair soft, manageable, and healthy.  And with a price tag of only around $10 (not bad, especially for a product that’s natural, safe, vegan, and cruelty-free), the Scalp Relief Shampoo and Conditioner have made their way into my permanent hair care routine.

To combat dry, flaky skin on the rest of my body, I’ve also been using derma e’s Psorzema Body Wash, followed by their Psorzema Creme.  All the products combined keep my scalp and skin looking and feeling healthy!
