Better Natured Hair Color Review

I’ve always been a fan of DIY beauty treatments – from at-home manicures to nourishing facial treatments (often using ingredients straight from the kitchen!). Hair coloring is no exception, and with salons currently closed (at least where I live), now is a great time to do it at home, or at least experiment if you’re completely new to the process.

Why do I prefer coloring my own hair? It’s really two factors – time and control. I had my hair colored in the salon once, but honestly wasn’t at all crazy with the results. In fact, I ended up coloring my hair at home a month later because I was so unhappy with the shade and color placement.  At home, on the other hand, I’m free to choose any shade I want, which is great, especially once I’ve found a brand that offers a good match. I can also control the processing time, which allows me to opt for more subtle results and/or a more gradual transition to a new shade.  And of course coloring at home saves time (and money), especially when all you need is a quick touch-up!

Better Natured Hair Color Review - At Home Hair Dye

This month, I was so excited to have discovered Better Natured™ – a brand that chooses to use cleaner, naturally-derived* ingredients in their hair color formulas, as well as their haircare and styling products.

Their hair color in particular contains anywhere from 87% to 92% naturally-derived ingredients. This includes a nourishing base of coconut oil, plus a triple plant milk blend of coconut, Tahitian palm, and white orchid milks, which all work to help condition the hair and scalp. The remaining 8-13% of the formulas contain what they call purely science** ingredient, which are synthetic ingredients necessary to ensure the efficacy and stability of the formula.  These ingredients are what give you rich, salon-gorgeous color, while at the same time boosting hair’s radiance and strength.

In addition to having clearer ingredients profiles, Better Natured™ formulas are not tested on animals.  They also have quite a few vegan formula options.

Better Natured Liqui-Creme Hair Color Review & Results

In the past, I used to color my hair every six months or so, typically in the spring/early summer, and again in the fall. Looking back, the last time I colored my hair was in July of 2019! Needless to say, with the turn of the new year finally here, I was ready for a refresh.

I decided to go a shade darker to revive my somewhat brassy, sun and chlorine-lightened locks. I went with Better Natured™’ Hair Color in the shade 4N Medium Natural Brown. Here’s a little step by step, followed by a before and after…

Better Natured™ Hair Color How-To

Like most at-home hair color kits, the process is super simple. Just pop on the gloves that come included, and mix the hair color with the developer using a 1:1 ratio. You can combine these two together using a brush and bowl, or simply mix in a bottle. I personally prefer to use a bottle as I find it makes the application super quick and easy, especially if you’re coloring your own hair.

Once mixed, you can start depositing the color formula on dry hair, starting at your roots and working down. (The ends tend to be the driest, so they soak up the color much quicker! Definitely save that area for last.) After applying, just wait 35 minutes for the color to process, then rinse. Finish up by shampooing and conditioning, and you’re done!

Better Natured Hair Color Review, Before & After

Overall, I was very impressed by how natural-looking my results turned out. The nourishing ingredients like coconut oil + the plant milk blend also left my hair feeling soft, smooth, and deeply conditioned afterwards. I also have a fairly dry scalp, but thankfully the formula was very gentle and didn’t cause any irritation.

What’s even more exciting for me, though, is having found a hair color that consists of mostly naturally-derived* ingredients, as opposed to harsh chemicals and not-so-clean ingredients often found in other brand’s formulas. Combined with the gorgeous results and the amazing shade match, this hair color has earned a spot in my holy grail hair care routine!

Speaking of hair care, Better Natured™ has a full line-up of products to help keep hair looking healthy – from shampoos and conditioners, to leave-in treatments and styling products. I grabbed their Hydrating Leave-In Milk and Shine Glaze, which I use one after the other, after I’ve washed my hair.  I love that the formulas are lightweight, so they don’t weigh down my already heavy/thick strands.  I can’t wait to try out more from their line!
