The Jean Jacket Edit: My Top Picks

J. Crew Mercantile Denim Jacket on Amazon review

Jean jackets are one of those classic-cool wardrobe pieces that I personally think everyone should have in their closet. They can be worn all year round, and function as the perfect casual-chic layering piece over top of everything from summer dresses and tees, to plaid flannels and sweaters come fall. The trick is to find one that flatters and fits comfortably – here are my top picks!

Top Jean Jackets to Wear All Year Round

I have to kick this list off with a favorite of mine that I’ve been wearing since fall – the classic blue denim jacket from J. Crew Mercantile. It checks off all the key things I look for when buying a jean jacket – one, it has hint of stretch so that it moves with you, yet still looks sturdy and structured. Two, when it comes to shape, it’s not super boxy, but instead tapers in just slightly around the waist to create a more feminine shape.

The jacket also comes in a lived-in, faded black. Size-wise, if you want a more tailored fit, I’d recommend going with your usual size. For a roomier fit (and for layering over thicker tops/sweaters), size up one. For reference, I’m wearing the XS here.

If your wardrobe consists of primarily white, grey, and black tops like mine, it can also be fun to add a little pop of color with a dyed denim jacket. J. Crew Mercantile offers this cropped version in a gorgeous medium coral, pale orange-peach, and a bright yellow – all perfect for layering over spring and summer dresses on chilly summer nights, or elevating a basic white tee and jeans.

For an even more affordable pick, I’m loving this jean jacket from one of Amazon’s own clothing brands – Daily Ritual. Their line offers a ton of affordable, everyday wardrobe basics (including a favorite of mine – their super soft, weekend-perfect t-shirt dresses), and they didn’t skip on a classic jean jacket. Theirs is under $50 and comes in light, medium, and dark washes, all featuring a touch of fading for that vintage, lived-in look, plus a hint of stretch.

Have a little extra wiggle room in your spring/summer clothing budget? The Robyn denim jacket from Adriano Goldschmied would be an amazing investment piece. It has the perfect amount of stretch for a super comfy fit that moves with you. It also tapers at the waist for a flattering silhouette, and it comes in both classic and more vintage-looking washes – from a crisp, clean back to a lived-in pale blue. Looking for something with a bit more color? Their Mya jacket comes in everything from a gorgeous muted mauve, to a casual-cool olive green.
