Every year, just a few days before Christmas, I’ll head over to the King of Prussia mall, grab a pumpkin spice latte over at Starbucks, and pursue around with my friends and family. I might pick up one or two unexpected gifts in the process, but there’s no pressure since the bulk of my holiday shopping would have already been done by then – and that’s all thanks to the internet. Since I started working full-time, I’ve been doing about 90% of my Christmas shopping from my couch or desk, purely to save time and for the convenience. With all the variety of stores these days, I can find exactly what I’m looking for and then press that little checkout button, only to have it delivered to my doorstep in a few days. It just doesn’t get any easier or quicker than that!
Amazon is of course one of the primary places I shop for the sheer variety of items, customer service (and easy returns), and super quick shipping (thank you Amazon Prime!). Sometimes though, I’ll stray a bit from my friends’ and family members’ wish lists and get something a bit unique and memorable from Amazon Handmade.
Amazon Handmade is somewhat of a hidden gem. There, they offer thousands of unique, handcrafted gifts made by artisans all around the world – from nature-inspired pint glasses and old fashioned razor kits for men, to aromatherapy spa gift sets and delicate jewelry for the ladies. A lot of times, you have the option to customize gifts too – pick your friends’ favorite scents in this bath and body sets, or personalize a jewelry dish for her, or a rustic wood beer caddy for him. In fact, more than 50% of our selection is customizable and made-to-order. It’s also a great way to support independent artisans and small businesses that specialize in making handmade goods.
Of course one of my favorite sections to explore is ‘Beauty & Grooming’, where you can find everything from bath bombs to beard oils. If you’re not sure where to start out, I’d recommend checking out The Little Flower Soap Co. They offer little indulgences for the body and senses, all handcrafted in a little studio in Michigan. You can find gifts for pretty much everyone in their shop, plus they have a great selection of full-size sets all the way to little stocking stuffers like this Mini Spa Set, which includes a natural lip balm (in the scent of your choice) and bath salt packaged in a cute little drawstring bag.
Another fun section to explore is jewelry, where I first stumbled upon MJLuLu, an artisan based in Korea. I’m loving her minimalist designs, particularly these Rose Gold Plated Bar Dangle Earrings. They’re simple yet sophisticated, and pair with just about everything – from a casual tee and jeans, to a more glammed up cocktail dress. Pair it with a one-of-a-kind handmade jewelry dish to keep earrings, or rings, or other everyday favorites within reach on a vanity or dresser. The one shown here is by Fettle & Fire, and made from scratch by Lindsey in Colorado. It features a gorgeous lotus pattern, finished with a black glaze. It looks more exotic and feels more substantial than anything I’ve ever come across in a big-box store.
Amazon Handmade also has a huge selection of handmade clothing & shoes and handbags & accessories, as well as home & kitchen items. The latter section is where I found this unique ‘Reading at the Cafe’ soy candle by Frostbeard Studio, a couple-owned, Minnesota-based shop. It smells just like a coffee shop, and I love bringing it out in the evenings while curling up to a book. They also have a ton of other quirky candle scents inspired by Games of Thrones, Outlander, Harry Potter, and more. I can’t imagine anywhere else you’d be able to find a candle that smells like something Dumbledore would burn in his office! 🙂 On the flip side, if you’re looking for more classic scents, definitely check out the New York-based shop Lorenzen Candle Co, where you can find scents like Christmas Bakery, Oakmoss & Amber, and Pumpkin Spice Latte.
