Why Move to a Self-Hosted WordPress Blog?

While free blogging services have many great features, they aren’t always ideal.  As your grow your blog, you’ll find they can be quite limiting when it comes to creating a more custom design, driving traffic through SEO, and even monetizing your site.

For anyone who wants to take their blogging seriously and maybe one day treat it like a business, I recommend getting your own domain name and installing WordPress.org on your own web host.  This combination is very powerful and flexible when it comes customization and themes, functionality and plugin options, content organization, and more.  (But don’t confuse WordPress.com with WordPress.org.  It is only possible to install custom WordPress themes and plugins if you are running a WordPress.org self-hosted site.)

After switching from blogger to a self-hosted WordPress website myself, I noticed many advantages right off the bat.  Here are just a few:

1. Customized Design

When you self-host, you can design your site to appear exactly the way you want it. When you move to a WordPress.org site, you will have access to a far wider range of themes that you can further customize to fit your unique brand and style.

There are many companies out there who provide great WordPress themes at low prices.  My favorite is themeforest.

2. Access to Plugins to Improve Your Site

plugin is a software module that you “plug in” to WordPress to give your blog added functionality. No knowledge of coding is necessary to install and use a plugin – it just takes a few clicks and they’re designed to be very simple and user-friendly.

You can get plugins to help you improve your SEO, back up your blog, create custom forms, improve your website’s speed, create recipes that people can save/print, add RewardStyle and other affiliate product displays, and integrate your social media accounts. The list is huge, with 30,000+ available and counting.

3. Content Ownership

According to the terms of service for many of the free blogging services, you don’t actually have total control over your blog. Hidden in the small print, you’ll often find clauses that allow the provider to shut down your blog at any time, for any reason. If you are looking to generate income with your blog, that is an expensive risk. However, when you self-host your blog, you maintain full control over your content and your site.

4. Improved SEO to Drive More Traffic

Search engine optimization is one of the best ways to drive traffic to your website, but you lose out on higher rankings when you use a free blog site. This is because all of your content gets indexed to the free blog site, which ultimately hinders your SEO strategy. In addition, search engines like Google, tend to look less fondly to content found on free blogs and generally rank them lower than self hosted websites.  When you self-host, all of your content and keywords, alt tags, inbound links, etc. help your site to rank higher in the search engine results pages (SERPs) and drive more traffic to your site.

5. New Ways to Earn Money

When you host your blog yourself, you have far more options for monetization and have a greater chance of turning your blog into a source of income.  It opens up an array of options including ads/banners, affiliate links, sponsorships, product sales, and more.

For example, if you are planning to monetize your blog by working with ad networks or blogging agencies, owning a self hosted is often a requirement. Why?  Because these networks and agencies tend to use conversion and tracking plug-ins with their campaigns that you can’t install on a subdomain blog (blogger or WordPress.com).
